The best way to improve your English is by immersing yourself in the language, especially during the summer months when schools are closed and we tend to neglect (and forget) what we’ve learnt the past year.
Here are 4 things that students can do to practise English during the summer months and improve their knowledge:
1. Watch English TV series or movies with English subtitles
Watching English TV shows or movies is a great way to learn new vocabulary, practise listening and test your comprehension. What’s more, you can learn new phrases and see how they are used in everyday life!
2. Listen to English songs
Create a playlist of your favourite English songs and listen to them! If you’re up for a challenge, you can also try to learn the lyrics! It is much easier to learn new words and phrases when they are set to music, and you can expect your vocabulary to improve immensely!
3. Read a book
There’s probably no better way to learn a language than this! Find an English book that you’d really like to read and read it! You can also try reading out loud to practise your speaking and comprehension.
4. Write a story
Writing a story will help you practise your grammar and search for new words, and it can also be really fun! Your story can be about ANYTHING you want, but here are a few starting sentences to help you begin:
As soon as I jumped in the pool I spotted something at the bottom…
‘What have you done?’ my neighbour yelled as we ran away…
I woke up and couldn’t believe my eyes…
We quickly ran upstairs and looked for a hiding place…
I looked inside the drawer and there it was – the map!
