This school year is almost over, meaning that children will soon have to spend more time at home, while parents will (once again) have to think of ways for their children to have fun and enjoy themselves!
Over the summer holidays, a lot of the things that children learn during the school year begin to fade (which is why September is usually a month of revision!).
Here's a great activity that is suitable for Primary kids and High School kids alike. This activity combines music and English, and helps children relax, use their imagination and creativity, and refresh their English vocabulary.
➡ Give your child a piece of paper and a pencil.
🎶 Play a piece of music without lyrics and ask your child to listen to it. It could be of any style, like jazz, or classical, or reggae. Play it once from start to finish, and then play it again, and ask your child to really listen to the music.
✍️ Now the fun part! Ask your child to write down, in English, anything that comes to his or her mind while listening. Are they thinking of a particular picture? Maybe a story? Feelings? Emotions?
Ask them to really, really concentrate and imagine a scene: What is happening? What colours do they see? Is this a happy scene or a sad scene? Exciting or boring? Scary or pleasant?
Your child can be as descriptive as he or she wants. The more descriptive, the better! Younger kids may then go on and draw a picture based on what they wrote, while older kids can turn their thoughts into a short fiction story!
